An Introduction to the Nathan Perry Mysteries
by Carol Preflatish
Hello everyone, I’m Carol Preflatish, and I write the Nathan Perry Mystery Series. I’d like to tell you a little about me and how my series came about.
I started writing in 1999 as a challenge to myself for the millennium. I wanted to see if I could write a complete book in 2000. I succeeded, and I was hooked. Unfortunately, it took me ten years and two more books before I became published.
In 2010, I sold my first romantic suspense book. I was on my way. I sold two more books, then right after I signed a contract for my fourth romantic suspense, the publishing house closed its door. I received the rights back to the books and self-published the first three, but was on the search for a new publisher for the fourth and, eventually, fifth book.
After I signed contracts for those last two romantic suspense books, I questioned whether I wanted to continue writing romance. They were short and easy to write, but I was no longer enjoying it. I didn’t even read romance anymore. I was reading mysteries.
A few years earlier, I attended the Magna cum Murder conference (now called Prime Crime). It’s a conference for both readers and writers of mystery. I loved it, and on that first night, in my hotel room, I started making notes for my first mystery. I was hooked again, and was loving it.
As a young adult, I had an interest in law enforcement, which is how I met my future husband, a police officer. Instead of going into law enforcement, I went into social work. My husband and I used to have a joke about how the wives of the guys he arrested on Saturday night would probably be in to see me on Monday morning.
After being bitten by the murder mystery bug, I had to come up with characters, location, and a plot for the first book. I was a huge fan of Robert B. Parker’s Jesse Stone books, about a police chief in a small town in Massachusetts. I thought about how much I always wanted to visit Salem, Massachusetts, where the witch trials were held in 1692. That’s how I came up with the fictional town of Mystic. In my series, Mystic is a neighboring town to Salem.
Now, I needed a main character. After a lot of thought, Nathan Perry was created. He’s an Afghanistan war veteran, who suffered wounds from an IED explosion. He recovered from his injuries and moved back to his hometown of Mystic to become the police department’s first detective. The first book in the series, Homecoming to Murder was born. It was published by Seventh Star Press, and came out in early 2020. That book was followed by The Coin Collector in late 2020, and then my latest book, Witch Hunt, released in February 2022.
Currently, I’m working on the fourth book in the series, tentatively titled, Murder in Mystic Hollow. While writing that, I’m making plot notes for at least one more in the series.

Mystic is known for its history of witchcraft in the area. It’s what brings tourists to town, and when another murder occurs, there is rising pressure on Nathan to solve the case quickly.
Nathan’s investigation pulls him into an unfamiliar world rife with covens, magic, and lore to find the killer. A small town gripped in fear is depending on him to prevail.
